Ebook About
“I don’t want you to rehabilitate me,” Philip Roth said to his only authorized biographer, Blake Bailey. “Just make me interesting.” Granted complete independence and access, Bailey spent almost ten years poring over Roth’s personal archive, interviewing his friends, lovers, and colleagues, and listening to Roth’s own breathtakingly candid confessions. Cynthia Ozick, in her front-page rave for the New York Times Book Review, described Bailey’s monumental biography as “a narrative masterwork … As in a novel, what is seen at first to be casual chance is revealed at last to be a steady and powerfully demanding drive. … under Bailey’s strong light what remains on the page is one writer’s life as it was lived, and―almost―as it was felt."    Though Roth is generally considered an autobiographical novelist—his alter-egos include not only the Roth-like writer Nathan Zuckerman, but also a recurring character named Philip Roth—relatively little is known about the actual life on which so vast an oeuvre was supposedly based. Bailey reveals a man who, by design, led a highly compartmentalized life: a tireless champion of dissident writers behind the Iron Curtain on the one hand, Roth was also the Mickey Sabbath-like roué who pursued scandalous love affairs and aspired “[t]o affront and affront and affront till there was no one on earth unaffronted"—the man who was pilloried by his second wife, the actress Claire Bloom, in her 1996 memoir, Leaving a Doll’s House.    Towering above it all was Roth’s achievement: thirty-one books that give us “the truest picture we have of the way we live now,” as the poet Mark Strand put it in his remarks for Roth’s Gold Medal at the 2001 American Academy of Arts and Letters ceremonial. Tracing Roth’s path from realism to farce to metafiction to the tragic masterpieces of the American Trilogy, Bailey explores Roth’s engagement with nearly every aspect of postwar American culture.

Book Philip Roth: The Biography Review :

With multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Blake Bailey, it seems increasingly unlikely they're made up from whole cloth as part of a hatchet job against him or by proxy, the subject of his book, Philip Roth. I suspect I wouldn't approve of Bailey the man, but that's separate from reading his book.Bailey’s biography of Roth is well worth reading. It helps you understand the talented but terribly complicated and flawed creature called Philip Roth. There are moments in it where Bailey's dismissal of the pain Roth caused women is somewhere south of cavalier and his judgments on Roth's two wives need close examination. However, Blair presents considerable evidence from other observers of their behavior and attitudes. I just wish he didn't seem so invested in detracting from them. Why, for instance, are they both harridans and duplicitous monsters where Roth's friend, Mia Farrow, about whom similar charges have been made, is painted as all good?I’ve read and appreciated authors who’ve done or advocated things I consider heinous. Colette’s description of what Willy made her do to earn money is sickening; there's Celine’s transparent racism; and The Story of O is sexual abasement run rampant. (Then there are Wagner and Strauss, racist in their beliefs but talented composers. Woody Allen, Roman Polanski --rotten men but notable movies. And painters like Caravaggio, Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon.Roth was way too often not a nice guy. But at other times, he was an extremely nice guy, super nice, generous and supportive beyond what was called for. ‘Complicated’ is probably the best judgment on him. What comes across in this portrayal of him is a vacant space in his perception of and reaction to others. There seems a hollow space inside him that sought unconditional acceptance, which, on the face of it, even saints seldom or never achieve. But oh my, could he write, and how much did he tap into something in our psyche that needed unleashing! Also how versatile a writer he was --not his preoccupations, which were near constant, but the way he portrayed them, the flexibility and virtuosity of his prose style.I have nothing against Bob Dylan, but the Nobel committee's awarding Dylan its prize against Roth was an unwarranted slap in the face of our greatest living writer at the time (now deceased). The bottom line: I emerged from the 800+ pp. of Bailey's biography feeling I understood Roth better.
What has happened to Freedom OF THE PRESS? Why would a publisher cancel a book because you find the author has a flawed character, a fact that has not been proven. This is the most outrageous censoring in recent time. Do we discount Nabokov because he has a shady attitude towards young girls. If one doesn't approvie of the biographer's behavior, simply don't read the book. But give a devotee of Philip Roth's writing a chance to explore his life? Maybe, we should remove Oscar Wilde's from our stores and libraries? Just fill the shelves with Trump books, and call it a day. This Biography of Philip Roth is informative, interesting and entertaining. I recommend the read and hope that one will marvel at such a body of work. After all, Philip Roth had his flaws. Does that mean we should stop reading his work? The. world is upside down and spinning out of control.
